       Department History

The first meeting of the Upper Township Volunteer Fire Department was in February 1960. It was held at the White Barber Shop which was on the north side of the Arts Superette.

The motivation for organizing the department was two structure fires on Hog Run Road. One of the residences was Preacher Price’s and the other was an Aldridge residence.

C.J. Bently, A.D. Sauders, Ison Hardy, Art Kimble, Ramon Adams, Bill Boggs, Bill Preston, Bill Chatfield, Gene Neal, James Blankeman, Bob Ralph, Harold Blair, Wade Boyd, Virgil Pancake, Hershal Pancake, Ray Howard, and Paul Bently were some of the founding members of the Upper Township Volunteer Fire Department. Their wives formed the UTVFD Auxiliary and began fund raising. They had bake sales and quilt fairs.

The first fire truck was purchased for $3000.00. Thirty people went to the bank and signed $100.00 bank notes to finance the truck. The Perry Township volunteer Fire Department donated the first nozzle. Chief Sanders and Captain Brude of the Ironton Fire Department were instrumental in acquiring equipment for the Department.
